Effective Range for Actions
The range in which actions and abilities are effective is split into 3 categories:
- Melee Range,
- Nearby, and
- Enormous Area.
Melee Range
Some actions or abilities require that you make physical contact with a target, or that targets be within melee range. In both cases, this means the action or ability has a Melee Range requirement.
Your effective melee range is a 3 m (10 ft) diameter circle around you, meaning you can move up to 1.5 m (5 ft) in any direction to make physical contact with a target. Most Emotion-based physical actions require you to be within melee range of your target.
If playing on a battlemap, a melee target is 1.5 m (5 ft) away from you, or a single hex or square away.
Nearby
Nearby is meant to invoke a sense of closeness, rather than a rigid numerical distance. Your target is nearby if:
- You occupy the same physical space as your target,
- You are able to perceive your target, and
- You could feasibly do whatever it is you want to do with your target.
To perceive a target, you must be able to see them or be certain of their location through some other means.
The effective range of social interactions and ranged attacks is usually limited to nearby targets. This may change depending on the type of interaction or weapon. For example, social interactions using technology have no range limit, and sniper rifles can reach targets further away.
If playing on a battlemap, a nearby target is 30 m (100 ft) away from you, or 10 hexes or squares away.
Enormous Area
Enormous Area loosely defines an area covering space beyond your perception, but still limited in scope. Generally speaking, an enormous area spans multiple kilometres or miles, covering the equivalent of a town or a handful of city blocks.
If playing on a battlemap, you can usually consider the entire map to fit within an enormous area.
Magic and Technology
Magic has no range limit. In other words, your magic will be effective as long as you can properly identify your target, no matter how far away they are. Right next to them, across the room, several star systems away—it doesn’t matter. However, there are some constraints:
- You must be able to perceive your target directly, whether by occupying the same physical space, or through magic or technology.
- If you can’t perceive your target directly, you must have your target’s true name and face in mind when you perform magic with them as the target.
- If there isn’t a range requirement and the target isn’t nearby, you must roll an unmodified dice pool whenever you perform magical actions on the target. To roll an unmodified Magic dice pool, roll 1d8 without any abilities to modify the dice pool.
Similar constraints exist for the freedom and accessibility afforded by technology. You can do a lot from afar using interstellar networks like the NET, so it stands to reason you wouldn’t be limited by your distance from your target. However, you still need to perceive your target directly, or know the indexed name and face of your target. You do not need to roll an unmodified dice pool when using advanced technology.
Some abilities also specify an effective range in their description. In these cases, the range in the ability’s description is considered the effective range, regardless of whether the ability is magical, technological, or mundane in nature.
