Wealth Score

Immortal Freedom RPG > Rules > Items and Cyberware > Buying and Selling

Instead of keeping track of the number of credits your character has, or managing an in-game economy, abstract buying power during trade encounters is determined by a character’s Wealth Score.

Wealth scores range from 1 to 8. The higher your wealth score, the more things you can afford. Unless otherwise modified by an ability, players must either roll 1d6 at the beginning of the game to determine their wealth score or begin with a wealth score of 2.

Info

The credit values in the table above are for illustrative purposes only—it is not necessary to discuss the value of items, cyberware, or services in terms of credits during gameplay.

Gaining Wealth

Whenever you get credits through a trade, looting, Boons, or some other means, roll the die associated with your wealth score. If you roll the maximum number, or make the correct call during a coin flip, your wealth score goes up by 1. You then exchange your current wealth score die for the die associated with your new wealth score.

Losing Wealth

Whenever you spend credits through a trade, Drawbacks, Complications, or some other means, roll the die associated with your wealth score. If you roll a 1, or make the incorrect call during a coin flip, your wealth score goes down by 1. You then exchange your current wealth score die for the die associated with your new wealth score.

Sharing Wealth

Trading credits between player characters should be a rare event—something you do out of necessity and which makes sense within the narrative. Players shouldn’t feel like they can continuously gamble with each other to increase their wealth. Whenever your character gives or receives credits from another player character, both you and the other player must roll your wealth score dice to see if there are any changes to your wealth scores.

Group Purchases

You may combine the wealth of 2 or more player characters if you are participating in a purchase together. Wealth scores 1 through 6 are worth half the value of the scores directly above them.

The value of wealth scores 7 and 8 are so astronomically higher than the scores below them that the lower scores are simply a drop in the bucket by comparison.

When combining wealth scores 1 through 6, 2 scores of the same value are worth as much as the score directly above them. If the 2 scores are of differing value, then the highest score is selected as the current wealth score. The highest score is always selected when combining lower scores with wealth scores 7 or 8. If combining more than 2 scores, then the results are calculated exponentially through equal pairs until the highest wealth score is determined.

Assuming the transaction is successful, every player involved in the transaction rolls their wealth score die and resolves it as normal.

Example

You are your three friends decide it’s about time you bought your own shuttle. You know none of you can afford a new shuttle—that’s just not in your price range. But a vendor is willing to part with an old, beat-up model for cheap. The GM gives the old shuttle a wealth score of 6. Between you and your friends, you have the following wealth scores:

  • You: 3
  • Telara: 3
  • Ly’idel: 5
  • Fetahork: 4

You and Telara combine your wealth scores, bringing you to a wealth score of 4. Fetahork adds their own wealth score of 4, bringing the total wealth score to 5. Ly’idel reluctantly adds their credits to the pot, bringing you and your friends to a total, combined wealth score of 6. You all congratulate yourselves on your purchase, looking forward to fixing the old shuttle together.
