Vehicle Movement and Range
Vehicle movement and the range in which vehicle actions and vehicle abilities are effective depend on whether the encounter is in space, or on the surface of a planet, moon, space station, or similar. Player character movement and the effective range for player character’s actions work as normal—whether you’re in a vehicle or not.
Space Vehicle Encounters
In space vehicle encounters with starships and shuttles, distances are calculated in the thousands of kilometres. The range in which vehicle actions and vehicle abilities are effective is split into two categories: close range and long range.
Close Range
A starship or shuttle must be within Close Range of its target to perform the Dock or Ram vehicle actions. Close Range is a 10,000 km (6000 mi) circle around the vehicle, meaning a vehicle can move up to 5000 km (3000 mi) in any direction to perform the Dock or Ram vehicle actions.
Long Range
A starship or shuttle must be within Long Range of its target to perform the Fire Weapons, Hail, or Vehicle Scan vehicle actions. A starship or shuttle can reach a target at long range by moving a Significant Distance for Starships, or by moving a Short Distance for Starships twice. You can also perform the Push It to the Limit vehicle action to have your vehicle cross a significant distance in the time it would normally take your vehicle to cross a short distance.
If playing a space vehicle encounter on a battlemap, a target at long range is 100,000 km (60,000 mi) away from the vehicle, or 10 hexes or squares away. A significant distance for starships and shuttles is 100,000 km (60,000 mi), or 10 hexes or squares. A short distance for starships and shuttles is 50,000 km (30,000 mi), or 5 hexes or squares.
Surface Vehicle Encounters
Shuttles, speeders, and ground vehicles move 10 times faster than player characters and non-vehicle, non-player entities (NPCs) during surface vehicle encounters. Shuttles act differently during surface vehicle encounters than they do during space vehicle encounters, but starships always move as if they were in space.
A player character or NPC would need to move a short distance 10 times (or a significant distance 5 times) to catch up to a shuttle, speeder, or ground vehicle which just moved a Short Distance for Vehicles. They would need to move a significant distance 10 times (or a short distance 20 times) to catch up to a shuttle, speeder, or ground vehicle which just moved a Significant Distance for Vehicles.
You can perform the Push It to the Limit vehicle action to have your vehicle cross a significant distance for vehicles in the time it would normally take your vehicle to cross a short distance for vehicles.
Your vehicle must be within melee range of its target to perform the Dock or Ram vehicle actions, and its target must be nearby to perform the Fire Weapons, Hail, or Vehicle Scan vehicle actions.
