Experience
Experience (XP) is the currency by which you can gain certain benefits. It is a way to show your growth as you undergo your hero’s journey.
Earning Experience
Anytime you get Complications, the game master (GM) grants you 2 XP. You keep 1 XP and must immediately award 1 XP to another player character nearby. The extra XP is lost if none of your allies are nearby. You may also choose to gain 1 XP when you get Boons.
The GM may occasionally award XP as a reward when you accomplish something significant, normally in relation to your character’s personal character arc. Some abilities may also grant additional XP.
Spending Experience
Once you have acquired enough XP, you may choose to spend that amount to reach a new level, at which point you will acquire new abilities. You also have fewer negative stipulations when performing higher level magic, or using higher level legendary items and legendary cyberware.
Each level requires an exponentially larger amount of XP to reach, beginning with 12 XP to reach level 2, up to 20 XP to reach level 6.
You may also spend 1 XP to refuse Complications, re-roll, or gain Intuition.
There is no limit to how much XP you can hold onto, though it isn’t a good idea to hoard it for too long. You also do not need to spend your XP to reach a new level until you’re ready to do so.
