Hippopotamus

Immortal Freedom RPG > Non-player Entities (NPCs) > Animals

The hippopotamus is a semiaquatic mammal, recognizable for their barrel-shaped torsos, wide-opening mouths with large canine tusks, nearly hairless bodies and short legs. Hippos inhabit rivers, lakes, and mangrove swamps. While hippos rest near each other in the water, grazing is a solitary activity and hippos typically do not display territorial behaviour on land. Hippos are dangerous animals, due to their aggressive and unpredictable nature.[1]

Animals do not generally attack unprovoked. They only engage in combat if:

  • They feel threatened,
  • They’re defending their young or territory,
  • They’re desperately hungry,
  • They’re confused, or,
  • They’re diseased or in pain.

Most animals avoid conflict, preferring survival to undue violence. Animals only fight to the death if they’re protecting something or they’re cornered. Otherwise, they flee at the first sign of hostility. Predators usually fight until they’re unstable, at which point they retreat.
