No Drawbacks
Immortal Freedom RPG > Rules > Optional Rules
If you are finding the concept of Drawbacks difficult for your group, you may choose to opt out of using them. There are 2 ways to remove Drawbacks from your game: minor Complications and success threshold adjustments.
Drawbacks are the primary method in which players can shape the narrative and participate in collaborative storytelling—the intended experience for Immortal Freedom: The Roleplaying Game. Removing Drawbacks puts more responsibility for shaping the narrative in the hands of the game master (GM).
Minor Complications
Instead of having the players choose Drawbacks, the GM can simply inflict Minor Complications using the Drawbacks list whenever a player gets a mixed success. Any abilities which deal with Drawbacks would deal minor Complications, and players may pay 1 XP to refuse minor Complications.
Success Threshold Adjustments
If you want to remove Drawbacks entirely, players will get a complete success when rolling 1 or 2 successes. If this is acceptable to the group, you do not need to go any further. However, you can also opt to adjust the success thresholds by having 1 success be considered a failure and inflicting Complications, or making a critical success require only 1 success. Additional adjustments to player character abilities may be necessary if this option is chosen.
